A Little Sports History of Savannah

Savannah has a long history of great sporting events. The first horse race in Georgia was held in Savannah in 1740. Also, the first golf course in America  was built in Savannah in 1794.

The first car race in Savannah was held in 1908. There is an article and picture  here at the Georgia Historical Society website. Savannah's racing tradition is carried on today through the Savannah Speed Classic.

Savannah has hosted a baseball team since 1904. Great players such as Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Jackie Robinson have played here. Today, Historic Grayson Stadium is home to the Savannah Sand Gnats minor league baseball team.

Savannah also hosts the  Savannah Tire Hockey Classic, the Liberty Legends of Golf, the Savannah Storm Basketball Team and other sporting events throughout the year.

Let It Snow!

Will it snow it Savannah this winter? Never say never, but chances are slim. I'm just sayin', we don't get much snow in Savannah.

I love snow, especially when I can see it on TV or look at in pictures.

And don't go on about how southerners can't drive in snow. When I moved to the mid-west, I mastered it after the first snow or so. It was right after I did that 360 on a ice sheet and got scared enough to slow it down. I'd say it's just as hard to drive on a wet slippery Georgia red clay road any day.

But if snow you must, you can enjoy the Winter Wonderland at the Georgia State Railroad Museum. The event occurs this Sat. Jan. 7 from 10:00-11:30am. Children will discover the science behind cold weather, make their own "snow," and participate in a number of winter-themed art activities and enjoy a "snowy" story time.

Enjoy the snow!
